NAAS TOUR - Saints Junior Rugby Irish Tour 2010
Friday 22rd. to Monday 25th. October
On the weekend of the October half term the Saints Junior Rugby went on their annual tour to Naas in County Kildare in Ireland. This year 33 players comprising two teams, the U/13’s and U/14’s were accompanied with seventeen adults, coaches and parents, all supporting the relentless rugby tour.
The itinerary was jam packed with entertainment apart from competitive matches. Starting on Saturday with the “Viking Tour” of Dublin, which involves being passengers in an amphibious vehicle touring around the sites on road and water, a brilliant experience.
This was followed by two matches against Naas RFC resulting in scraping second place by the U/13’s loosing by one try and the U/14’s had a drawn game. After the rugby, there was a presentation made by Councillor Bethan Price to Naas Rugby Club on behalf of the City Council while Tom Evans, Chair of St Davids presented the Mayor of Naas with a slate trophy engraved with the Saints logo. John Williams Chair of the Junior section at St Davids presented Naas Junior Rugby with a unique engraved plaque which was made from cathedral stone. All the trophies were supplied and engraved by Malcolm Gray.
Sunday’s itinerary involved an 11 o’clock kick off against Clane RFC and Naas resulting in just missing out on a win again in both matches. After being well fed by Naas the boys and coaches travelled to the National Aquatic Centre, Dublin while some of the adults visited the Guinness Storehouse with keen interest to find “what really make Guinness taste so good”.
On our last day, Monday started by a return visit to Naas club where the boys were introduced to the fastest game in the world – “hurling”. All had a training session and a friendly match followed with a presentation where every Saints player was given a hurler and ball as a moment of the induction to Ireland’s number one sport. After leaving the Naas club and prior to catching the ferry we had one more task and that was to go bowling and laser tagging at Tallagh. With no injuries or sickness we sailed home to Fishguard saddened to feel it was coming to an end as players and parents had an awesome time and cannot wait till we revisit in October 2011.
